The actor is not the actor. The actor is the instrument. And if you’re lucky, great acting plays through you.
This is what I call the Art of Not Acting. It isn’t another technique. It isn’t a better way to perform. It’s an invitation to discover what happens when you stop trying to make something happen.
You don’t begin with knowing. You begin with “I don’t know.” You explore with “I don’t know.” And you are taken on a journey of “I don’t know.”
Along the way, you discover something that can’t be manufactured, rehearsed, or reached for. You are played. The moment plays you. The circumstances play you. And when you get out of the way, something far more alive than anything you could have planned can happen.
This work isn’t for everyone. Chances are it isn’t for you. Rare is the bird that wants to fly without the safety of a cage to go back to.
I’m looking for the actor who is willing to leap. The actor who doesn’t need certainty. The actor who is willing to risk not knowing. The actor who wants to discover what happens when they stop trying to get it right.
Don’t get it right. Get it real.
This is the actor I want to work with. The actor I’m dedicated to. The actor I do my best to empower and guide into the greatness that does them.
Something remarkable can happen when the actor gets out of the way. Not because you become a better version of yourself, but because you begin to discover more fully the you that’s already there.
The talent. The instinct. The vulnerability. The humanity. The thing that was there before you started trying to be an actor.
That is what I’m interested in. Not adding something to you. Removing what gets in its way.
I’ve spent more than twenty years helping creative and gifted people get out of their own way. My work with actors is rooted in that same understanding.
You cannot force yourself into the moment. The moment does you. And the greatest, most memorable acting moments are the ones you couldn’t have planned. They happen. They surprise you. They play through you.
That is the gift. Rarely opened but by a few. And ready to be given to anyone willing to leap.
