I GUIDE ACTORS FROM ACTING
TO WHAT IS

Robert Colt

What if the thing you’ve been trying to do is the thing that’s getting in the way? What if great acting doesn’t come from knowing what to do, but from being willing to discover what happens?

The Art of Not Acting isn’t another technique. It’s an invitation to let go of the need to control the moment, get the emotion right, or know where you’re going. You don’t prepare yourself to produce a result. You become available to what happens.

You start with “I don’t know.” You explore from “I don’t know.” And you allow yourself to be taken somewhere you couldn’t have planned.

This Isn’t About Adding More

Most acting training gives you more to do. More technique. More ways to listen. More ways to find the emotion. More ways to create the character. More ways to get it right.

I work in the opposite direction. We take away what isn’t real. We get underneath the habits, the self-consciousness, the need to perform, and the things you’ve learned to do to keep yourself safe, until something simpler can emerge. Something alive. Something that doesn’t need to be manufactured.

A true nothing is way more powerful than a false something.

The Actor Is the Instrument

The actor isn’t the source of the performance. The actor is the instrument. And if you’re lucky, great acting plays through you.

The greatest, most memorable acting moments don’t come from you. They happen to you.

That’s the territory we’re exploring. Not certainty. Not security. Not a formula for getting there. Availability.

What Happens in the Class

You explore. You take risks. You don’t know what’s going to happen. You allow yourself to be affected. You follow what is actually happening rather than what you think should happen.

And sometimes something happens that couldn’t have happened any other way. That’s when acting becomes alive. Not performed. Lived.

This May Not Be for You

Chances are it isn’t. Rare is the bird that wants to fly without the safety of a cage to go back to.

This work asks for something different: the courage to not know, the courage to let go of control, the courage to be fully alive, the courage to discover what happens when you get out of your own way.

But if you’re that actor, the actor who is curious about what might be possible beyond technique, the actor who knows there’s more, the actor who is willing to risk not knowing in order to discover, this is the work I want to share with you.

The Ongoing Class

The Art of Not Acting is an ongoing class. You don’t graduate from this work. There is always more to discover because there is no final answer to arrive at.

The work isn’t different from week to week. Only what happens is different.
